Tongs and crushing tongs from Karl Dahm

They come in different shapes, sizes and with an almost infinite number of different heads - pliers!

But whether they are crushing pliers, mosaic pliers, hard metal pliers, pottery pliers or scoring pliers, they all have the same basic structure. Pliers usually consist of three parts: Handles, joint and pliers head.

In this video you can see how easily tiles can be broken with our Ideal tile breaking pliers Dahm® art. no. 10889.

All pliers work according to the lever principle. Two two-sided levers are connected to each other by a joint. Here the two handles form the longer lever arms (force arms), the shorter ones form the pliers head (load arms). According to the law of leverage, the manual force applied to the handles is converted in a path-shortening manner and transferred to a workpiece by means of the tong head. The force in the jaws, which perform a gripping movement when the arms are pressed together, increases with the transmission ratio. In the case of pliers designed to generate large forces, the distance from the centre of the pivot pin to the handle must therefore be large and the distance from the centre of the pivot pin to the gripping jaws or cutting edges must be as small as possible. Pliers are usually forged from alloyed and unalloyed tool pieces.

The parrot tongs - The special tongs

Parrot pliers are a two-bladed tool with two parrot-shaped gripping jaws and slightly curved handles that diverge towards the rear. These special pliers are used by tilers to break out or enlarge holes in tiles. Of course, this assumes that a hole has been made before enlarging with the aid of a Lochboy (Art. 10686) and tile hammer or a drill bit. The upper parrot jaws of the pliers can then be driven into the hole from below and broken out piece by piece.

Other models of pliers

There are many pliers that are used in tile laying. Breaking pliers are one example. The Ideal breaking pliers (Art. 10889) from Karl Dahm have a special transmission joint that is ideal for breaking porcelain stoneware and large-format tiles. The Ideal breaking pliers can be individually adjusted to any hand size.
