Stove builders are an important group in the building trade. Stove fitters should not be confused with tilers, as stove fitters and pavers are each a separate professional group. Stove fitters require their own training.
A stove builder or stove setter has the task of developing, planning and building tiled stoves and fireplaces. Professionally speaking, stove builders are known as stove setters, hence the name, which means that such a fireplace is not built but set.
The stove builder or stove fitter has yet another name. Originally, this occupational group was called "Hafner". The term "Hafner" comes from the activity of pottery making. As the tiles for a stove, which the stove setter later placed, were still made by hand in the past, the production process was also known as "Hafner". These tiles are still made of clay today, as clay is an excellent conductor of heat, but they are rarely made by the potter himself. Today, the individual tiles are mainly produced by machine. However, the term "Hafner" is only used in Switzerland, Austria and southern Germany. In the rest of the German-speaking world, the term is usually used by stove setters and stove builders.
however, these two trades are very closely linked. Very often, trained tilers and master tilers have completed further training as stove fitters and stove builders. The advantage of this is that the tilers, who have already received an order from the customer to lay tiles, are already on the construction site. Now it is up to them to convince the customer of their qualities as a stove fitter.
In Austria and Germany, training to become a stove fitter("Hafner") takes three years. Just like tilers, stove fitters also have the opportunity to become a master craftsman. Here too, the basic requirements are attendance at the master school for stove setters and an enormous amount of hard work.
This online shop has focussed specifically on stove builders and "Hafner". The focus has been on creating a range for stove builders, i.e. developing, manufacturing and selling tools that stove builders need every day on the construction site. Ultimately, the aim is to make the work of a stove fitter easier. We always recommend starting with the stove fitter's toolbox for beginners. All the most important stove setter tools are packed in a small toolbox. Of course, you will also find other special tools for stove setters on this page. But now to the question, which tools does a stove setter mainly use? One of the most important tools for a stove setter is definitely various trowels with different teeth and pliers, as well as larger tools such as a stone cutting machine. It is important that the stone cutting machine for stove fitters has a cutting depth of at least 11 cm.
